Wheatland High School staff and students are focused on making 2009-2010 the best year ever. The collaborative Professional Learning Communities (PLC) program which was started in 2006, now supports all students in grades 9-12 at Wheatland High School. Each year has an overarching thematic focus. 9th Grade PLC teams are focused on transition from middle school to high school. 10th Grade PLC teams are working with the theme of student empowerment and responsibility. 11th Grade PLC Teams are looking at their role in the community. The 12th Grade team will be focusing on planning for the future and transitioning into the post-high school life. The major focus and impact of the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) push has yielded extremely positive results in its first three years of implementation. Students at Wheatland High School are failing far fewer classes and are making huge strides towards embracing the overarching philosophy that failure is not an option. The Professional Learning Community model continues to connect parents, students, and staff in positive ways that are yielding positive results. This increased level of success is palpable on campus. The student body is energized, positive, and an absolute joy to collaborate with. We are excited about the continual development and improvement of our school.
The Student Mentor Program continues to thrive evolve. Students are taking more active roles in positive mentorship. Student Mentors continue to play a very active role this year in orchestrating Freshmen orientation. They also continue to play a key role in collaborating with the Wheatland Middle School P.O.W.E.R. program at HR camp developing leadership and teamwork skills. The Student Mentors continue to seek opportunities to mentor students at both West and Libbey Elementary schools as well. Students and staff at Wheatland High School continue to collaborate to develop activities and a general climate that fosters tolerance, kindness, and respect to self and others. The vast majority of our school strives to make a positive impact every day.
A staff goal this year is to develop an integrated learning unit involving every classroom in a project aimed at raising Environmental Awareness and Responsible Conservation Stewardship. The Advanced Placement (AP) program enters its third year. Pre-AP Springboard curriculum is also being introduced in the content areas of Language Arts and Math. This is an exciting opportunity as PCSD #1 is the first district in the state to pilot the Pre-AP Springboard program.
Our staff is highly skilled, our students are dynamic, our programs are successful, our community is closely connected. Wheatland High School is truly a great place to be.
